It is famous for its well-preserved star-shaped bulwarks (*bolwerken*), canals, and historic city center. Dokkum is also the place where the Anglo-Saxon missionary Saint Boniface was martyred in 754.

Dokkum is a small town, and the historic center and bulwarks are easily explored on foot. There is no train station, but regular bus services connect to major cities in Friesland like Leeuwarden, where you can connect to the train network.
